I think this would be tough to make into a messy bun hat because you need to cinch the rectangle closed to make it into a hat shape. You might be able to try using elastic thread to close the top of the rectangle and leave it more open for a ponytail to fit through. Lmk if you try, I'd be interested to see how it works!

Not a dumb question at all! Usually fur pom poms have a little loop of elastic that allows you to sew your yarn through them to secure the pom pom. I also like to just tie them to the top of the hat and tuck the yarn tails into the top of the hat in case I decide I want to remove it and use a different pom pom. 🙂

Hey Grace, I think you could by using a technique similar to adding crochet ribbing. Here's a ribbing tutorial that might help. Otherwise, you could use post stitches (front post double crochet and back post double crochet, for example) to create ribbing in a new color.

Hope that helps!

If I want to make the brim a different color and I already made the rectangle, can I add that at the end? How would I do that?

I didn’t see specific instructions and wanted to find out before I tried to buy one. Or do you think it’s easier to just use the yarn to attach a pom for a beginner? I haven’t started my hat yet, I wanted to make sure I understood the instructions before I started.

This is fantastic! I managed to make matching beanies for my 2 kids and their new cousin. Thanks for sharing this. It's been a long time since I crocheted and even then I was a beginner. This was a great way to get back to it.

I made my daughters a little short (I chained too few to start). Is there a sneak way to extend it without it being obvious?
Thanks!

When I saw 1 1/2 hours I thought I could make them for the 8 small children in my life but I’m glad I didn’t invest in all the yarn I would need. Your instructions are very clear and I love the hat. My other problem is my sides started to get a little wonky. Maybe I should quit and go back to sewing. Thanks for your instructions and enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas❣️ 🦃 🎄

This is generally an easy pattern - my only gripes are that the video tutorial shows you doing yarn-unders for the double crochets but that isn’t noted in the written pattern and I cant quite tell if that’s crucial or not; the other is that the tutorial for the seam is super tricky to see. Just the same thank you for this quick and easy hat!

My husband is impressed with it - and gave it the thumbs up as a Christmas present for my brother. I'm now quickly doing up a scarf in the same stitch. Like you, I learned to crochet around the age of 8 years old ( in school by the nicest teacher ever!) Now I'm on maternity leave and having my little boy seems to have brought out my creative side again!
Happy Christmas to you and your family.

I've been looking at it for about half an hour and trying to find the video link. All I can find is text like "in the video below," then I scroll down and don't see anything clickable that takes me to a video, and then I reach text like, "see the video above." Logically, the video should be somewhere between those two phrases, but it's not! I see the words "VIDEO TUTORIAL" in big, fancy font multiple times on the page, but they're not clickable. Please help! The whole reason I purchased this pattern was because I thought I could refer to the video tutorial since I'm a beginner.

I'm also loving your instruction to finish your last row at the opposite corner than the starting tail...It DOES make the seaming and gathering much easier!

I just wanted to add a tip to anyone using the faux fur pompoms -- Instead of sewing the pom to the hat, sew a button just inside the top and thread the elastic loop in through the top hole and around the button. This makes the hat washable (depending on type of yarn used, of course) because the "fur" pompom can be removed then re-fastened.

Hey Christine,

Yes, I imagine there's a bit of a difference in the thickness of the yarn or the way we crochet. A good rule of thumb is to make a small gauge swatch (like 5" x 5") before you start a project to see if you need to change your hook size to meet the designer's gauge that's listed in the pattern. Sometimes we crochet differently or use different yarn the that affects the sizing. In any case, your solution is a great one and if you'd like to make more hats, you can always just chain a few extra stitches at the beginning to make it a bit taller. 🙂

Hey Christine,

These are great questions! The amount of yarn in the ball (3.5 oz vs 4 oz) should have no impact on how your hat turns out. Instead, it just impacts how much yarn is in the ball. You have the right idea by choosing a category 5 yarn to make sure it's the same weight as what's in the pattern.

I suspect that your stitches a just a bit tighter than the pattern gauge. You could verify this by measuring a 4" square of your hat and compare it against the gauge listed in the pattern.

You're right that just adding extra rows will work just fine though and your daughter will have a pretty hat to wear! Just be sure to work an even number of rows total as that is what will make the ribbing look the most seamless. 🙂

I have a question on the yarn – I am using a 5 – bulky yarn, but it is 3.5 oz on the label. I noticed your pattern says 4.0oz . I am using 8.0mm hook per the pattern. I have done all 18 rows and the dimensions of the rectangle are : 11 x 12″. My foundation row of 37 chains comes out to only 12″ vs. 14.5" long. The 18 rows are only 11 ” wide. vs. 18: Do you think mine is coming out smaller because the yarn is 3.5 oz vs. 4 oz? I chose “5” bulky so I thought that would be the same?? I plan to just add more rows so it will fit around my daughter’s head, but I’m curious if you have any idea what I did wrong…….. and why my width/ length are so much smaller in dimensions that the pattern says?

The 18 rows are only 11 " wide. vs. 14: Do you think mine is coming out smaller because the yarn is 3.5 oz vs. 4 oz? I chose "5" bulky so I thought that would be the same?? I will just add more rows so it will fit around my daughter's head, but I'm curious if you can figure out what I did wrong........ and why my width/ length are so much smaller in dimensions that the pattern says?

🙂 I'm not sure! But I can find out! I just realized I can also take a tape measure next time I go to Target and see if they have any baby beanies or hats I can measure. Thanks for the input!

Hey Michele,

What a generous project you're taking on! I'd google something like "average newborn baby head circumference" or something like that. Then you can just make a rectangle width slightly less than the total circumference of a baby head to allow some room for stretching. I'm not exactly sure about the height of the initial chain though. Perhaps with some googling you could find an average baby "head height" too? Lol, is that even a thing?

Thank you for the beautiful pattern - I can't wait to try it! I'm working on some baby beanies, and wondered how big the rectangle should be for a tiny one? The American Heart Association is collecting red knitted and crocheted hats to give to new babies in local hospitals to raise awareness for heart defects. They said they will take any baby size - babies come in all shapes and sizes! - but I thought I'd ask for advice before I jump right in. Thanks so much!

Yup, I think your solutions are spot on. You may want to make a slightly fewer stitches if you don't want a super slouchy hat.

The other thing is that you don't necessarily have to go down a hook size because that might make your fabric kind of stiff. I'd use the recommended hook size on the yarn and then just chain fewer stitches / work fewer rows to make the same size rectangle. 🙂

Happy crocheting!

I am making this beanie for charity and want to use Loops & Threads Kaleidoscope (Super Bulky 6), since I found it on sale and have so much. I made it and it is a bit big. If I go down in hook size to 6.00mm and do fewer rows do you think it will still work? Or do you have a different suggestion while still keeping with the number 6 yarn? I love the pattern and it works really quickly. I'm a fairly novice crocheter and would love your help troubleshooting. Thanks!

I did the 37 chains at the beginning. I couldn't find the yarn suggested in this pattern so I used Patons Classic Wool Bulky, 3.5 oz, . I'm wondering if that could be why it ended up too long. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I made it once and it was to small for me. I didn’t have the size of hook you were using so I used one smaller so it was a lot smaller than the one you made. I did 24 total rows, but it was still to small. I will be giving to charity. I made one today with a larger hook and tried to keep my stitches looser. I did 24 rows again and also 45 in the beginning chain so it’s more like a slouch and I love it! Thanks again!

Thank you for this pattern! I haven't attempted crochet in years and years. I have suddenly been craving a hook and yarn in the evenings while watching TV! I've been stalking your site for a couple of weeks now. I am going to visit a lifelong friend in a couple of weeks and will meet her toddler grandson. I want to make a couple of these for him. It seems like an easy project to get my feet wet (or my fingers ). I can't wait to try other projects on your site as well, but figure I probably need to take baby steps at first. I am so sorry for your family's loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Your generosity spreads happiness to many more than you know. The caps I will be making and gifting will delight many - not to mention my personal enjoyment of making and giving! Happy New Year!

Speaking of crochet to look like knot, back in the 70’s I made an Afghan that looks like an Aran knit . It was difficult but beautiful. I still have the Afghan and the pattern if you want it.

Hey Jeanette,

The pom pom is made from alpaca and is ethically produced. You can read more about it here:
https://www.lovecrochet.com/us/toft-pom-pom

Thank you for your concern. I agree torturing a raccoon would not be justifiable in the name of creating a crochet beanie.
